Recommended Buys – Summer 2017

Some suggestions from the recent bottles we’ve pulled.

Collevite Falerio Pecorino DOC 2014 (78046, $6.92 CS Sale)
I’ve written the merits of this one before, but now have to point out that it’s on sale for $6.92… Come on son!

Le 7 Torri Fiano di Avellino 2015 (78442, $11.99 CS)
This is crisp, maybe even sharp, and offers a fair amount of depth and complexity, especially considering the price. Great seafood wine for the upcoming warm season, not to mention that it should continue to develop for 3-5 years. Stock up! (Media Sample)

Galen Glen Stone Cellar Semi-Dry Riesling ($12.99 at Wegmans!)
A well-made, tasty Riesling; sweetness up front with a reasonably crisp finish. While it does lack the stony acidity of Germany’s best, it’s still a good value at $13. And nobody will ever guess it’s from PA.

Murrieta’s Well The Whip 2014 (49621, $16.99 Luxury)
Beautifully balances the modern white wine style – creamy and luscious – with bracing acidity and salinity, making it a fine partner for food as well as a refreshing patio sipper. (Media Sample)

Chateau Montaud Rose Cotes de Provence 2016 3L Box (17448, $29.99 Luxury)
Though pricey for a box, this brings home the classic Provencal rose flavors at a still-great price per bottle, and it can be enjoyed all week.

Claudie Peguet Fleurie 2014 (33865, $7.94 CS Clearance)
There’s a deep earthiness and almost bretty funk on this, which I normally enjoy but would not expect in a Fleurie. Still, it’s rounded out by tart raspberries on the finish. Interesting quaff, especially at the $8 sale price in PA. (Newer vintages of the same wine also available at full price.)

Cantina Colli Ripani Sangiovese Marche 2015 (17645, $8.99)
Classic Sangiovese notes of violet, cherry and dirt. A simple, fresh wine that makes a good partner for pizza, pasta or burgers, especially at $9. (Media Sample)

Terre de Trinci Sagrantino di Montefalco 2009 (44579, $14.99 Luxury)
TdT produces a reliable, typical Sagrantino at a great price, and this is no exception. My one gripe was a slight synthetic, rubbery note, especially with some air (which is counterintuitive). I am hoping with a few years that will dissipate.
