One of the oldest and largest wineries in Pennsylvania, Mazza Vineyards began in the early 1970s, shortly after the PA Limited Winery Law was passed in 1968, effectively ending the PLCB ban on in-state winery operations.

Mazza — who farms some of its own grapes but mostly works with a long list of in-state growers — has a dizzyingly large portfolio, especially when “sister” wineries South Shore Wine Company (which made wine before prohibition, and was revived by the Mazza family in 2007) and Mazza Chautauqua Cellars (in New York) are considered. There are hybrids of course, vinifera, dry, off-dry, sweet, dessert, sparkling, fortified, etc. Mazza was also the first Pennsylvania winery to make ice wine.

As such it is quite difficult to judge Mazza. We at PAVC tend to steer clear of large wineries with ample productions of sweet or bulk stuff, though in this case it is worth noting that Mazza is also making some nice dry vinifera wines.

They’ve done well in recent competitions with both their South Shore Gruner Veltliner — a wonderfully fresh and crisp cool climate version — and their Mazza Vineyards Teroldego — an obscure Italian grape that is showing potential here in PA.
